Undercoating?

All,

I was dismayed to learn that all Avantis had undercoating in the wheel wells when new. I really don't like the look of undercoating, and I prefer the clean look of the painted wheel wells.

Has anyone restored a car and NOT reapplied the undercoating?

Bad idea?

Thanks!

Mike

It was used as a sound deadener and a profit-maker for dealerships. Outside of that it had no purpose. Avanti Motors listed it as an option as a sound deadener.

When I rebuilt my '70 it was not under coated. It was, however, painted black inside the wheel wells.

If you are going to drive your car, it is there to prevent rocks from making a star crack from the back side, There are lots of alternatives. You can get a clear bedliner urethane material that you can tint with your paint, and apply underneath.
