With a quick glance, what 'dead giveaway' will differentiate an early Avanti '327' GM engine from the later '350' version? (Both engines with plain rocker covers..NO decals!)

later ones would have the Rochester quadrajet as opposed to the AFB.

OK....but that's really not it..(Hint...This is actually a part of the engine...not an accessory like a carb or alternator or starter.)

The vibration damper on a 327 is thinner than a 350. Also there is not a bolt in the center to hold it on.

Wow...another difference.....good info, but still not 'IT'!

OK! Let's try this one. Early 327 (#461/#462) heads have No accessary holes in the front of the heads.

ALL GREAT INFO GUYS!.....but you still haven't hit on a very obvious part (If it's there)

I think we are going to differ on what is "dead obvious at a quick glance" on this one on an installed engine.

If one looks for the presence of a road draft tube as a quick indicator of an early small block Chevy,.....I'd really have to say it's quite obvious (IMHO)

"Unless" the tube and baffle under the intake manifold were removed and Pcv system was installed. Fairly common practice.
