Avanti GT

The 85 Avanti GT is now safe and sound in South Bend and I am starting the transformation of the car back to the way it was at Mid-Ohio. Talking to Herb Adams a few weeks ago I found out nothing was standard on this car. It was a test bed so it was always changing so I am going to do my best to get it back to how it was at that time.

I did find out the 5.0 engine was the correct (or original) to the car because Herb said it was under powered, but Kelly had AC added to the car. We are removing that. I am going to replace the breaks back to the original Corvette C4 units and I want to replace the seats and add the roll cage. Any idea of the type of seats and roll cage I should use?

Any photos that are NOT on the internet would be helpful.

This is going to be my winter project and I want the car ready for the International in May.

I will be posting photos as we go.

I welcome input.

Thanks

Bill

Excuse me while I pick up my lower jaw from the floor. The Avanti GT is one of only two Avantis that were built to perform in my favorite type of auto racing, carving up road courses.

Now that I've helped get 63R-1025 back up to operational status, it's my goal to start with a basket-case '84 or '85 (pretty much just an empty shell) and build a street legal homage to the 1985.5 GT, down to the fender flares and multi-link IRS. I hope to see the car at South Bend next year; I'd love to see / photograph it up close and thorough if permitted.

Bill,

I saw your car at an auto auction in Louisville, KY around 1987, I think. It was all white then and did not have any racing numbers, decals, etc. I got a photo of it from a front 3/4 angle which was later published in the AOAI magazine.
