I.D. Tag

I have a 1963 Avanti built on 12/27/62. I have read that the early Avanti had a "tag under the dash or glovebox" that had I.D. information about the car. I looked under my dash and glove box and found no tag. I did see some very old glue that held something under the dash. If this tag did exist at some time was it paper, decal, metal? What information was provided by this tag? How was it attached? Does anyone have a copy of this tag that they could show on the forum?

There's a label glued either under the vanity tray or on the back of the vanity mirror that has the paint information. Avanti II's did the same thing...even more important with a II as the factory would paint the car any automotive color and a definitive ID of the paint color could be difficult to determine otherwise or without the build sheet.

After so many years it wouldn't be surprising if it had fallen off or has been removed.

I've made my share of mistakes when it comes to Avantis. I've learned over time previous information in print and opinion has been sometimes proven wrong when more documentation is uncovered. Studebaker information is often contradictory but generally fairly consistent. Avanti Motors Corporation information can be a real nightmare...lots of information is either undiscovered or nonexistent. So much was done on the fly regarding some automobiles and sometimes things were done differently by different assembly workers so the same options on two different cars were done differently.

For such a low production automobile, Avanti history is especially fascinating. Lots of intrigues, myths, unrecorded information, different memories from various people...truly fascinating. We all need to keep open minds as not everything is as solid history as one might like. That's why I preface many things I say with "To the best of my knowledge" or "My belief" or similar.

I just noticed Schuler's post and wanted to let you know that on my 63', I found a copy of the "build sheet" taped to the top of the glove compartment. Only way you could get at the thing (or even know it's there) is to probably take out the dash like I did when I rewired my car. There was enough of the sheet "readable" to determine what it was and what was there matched the build sheet I got from the Studebaker museum. The sheet was so brittle and dirty it basically came apart by just touching it. Not sure about the paint thing. if there was something there it probably got torn off years ago.
