'Double Saddle' exhaust clamp

Does anyone know why Stude used a 'double saddle' clamp at the L&R head pipe to front exhaust pipe connection on Avantis? Was there a problem sealing those pipes? And is it definitely necessary to use those unique clamps there, or will a quality single clamp do the job just as well?

It may simply have been a cost thing. Studebaker may have used them on other cars and it simplified costs and inventory numbers. Years ago I worked in an auto center and it was common to use adapters with two clamps...this was essentially the same thing but only one part number rather than various adapters for many cars.

They were pretty much across the board for I believe 61 and up cars. I think it's an added insurance against what they must have perceived as a trouble area.
