Note sent to Raymond Loewy March 27,1961

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd post this note, containing the famous "doodle" (see beneath left arrow) ,that was sent to Raymond Loewy in Palm Springs by Sherwood Egbert on March 27,1961,saying "it seems that we are on right track" regarding the ongoing design work for Studebaker's new sports car in comparison to the new E-Type Jaguar.

As both arrows point to revised targa style roofs, or open cars, it would appear that was the context of the "on the right track", not just Avanti.

It is my understanding that that (Targa roof) was the first reason for a roll bar in the Avanti.

And neither the Studebaker Avanti or the E-Type ever ended up becoming factory equipped with a Targa roof.

Brooks Stevens also experimented with Targa roofs at that time as well.

Interesting how few Targa roof cars there were in the marketplace in 1962/3 with all the concept drawings around showing this feature.
